Beams and Motes

I haven't posted in awhile.  A year really.  Teaching adult institute and going to graduate school have sucked up all my discretionary time.  However, I saw this post on Facebook and it struck a chord.  I love everything about this article (Written by a YSA ward Bishop).   My primary motivation in posting it here is to help me remember me to heir on the side of love and focus on my own beams and motes, not others as well as to put it somewhere that I can find easily for a future institute lesson for New Testament next semester.  :O) Richard Ostler  added  2 new photos . resolving

I am one of the few that really believes in the power of resolutions.  I can't remember the last time I didn't make a New Year's resolution.  I usually am pretty successful at gettin 'er done too.  Not always.  But usually. This year I am resolving a few things.    I have picked a word that I am adapting as my "mantra" for the year to help me remember.  It is self- LESS   What this means to me is that I want to do more for others and focus on my self less.  Whether that is my hubby or children or the new family in the ward that doesn't know anyone or a total stranger.  Every day I hope to put less focus on self and more on those around me.  I plan to do this by service, prayer, giving in to my own wants, sacrifices of time and money, and kindness.   I also resolve to cook more .  I did this one about ten years ago.  It was a big sacrifice for me because i loathe cooking.  Those of you who know ...

Builders vs. Wreckers

A little poem I heard from John Bytheway on a BYU fireside (on BYUTV) today. Makes me stop and go "hmmmmm....." I might have another resolution to add to my growing list..... Builders vs. Wreckers I passed one day through a lonely town And saw men tearing a building down. With a ho-heave-ho and a husky yell They swung at a beam and a side wall fell. I asked the foreman, “Are these men skilled- The kind you’d hire if you had to build?” “Oh no!” he chuckled, “No indeed- The common laborer is all I need.” “Why I can destroy in a day or two What builders have taken weeks to do.” I thought to myself as I went on my way “Which of these rolls have I tried to play?
